Pop!_OS COSMIC: Why Vibe Typer Says "Copied. Press Ctrl+V"
Understand why Vibe Typer may copy your transcript instead of pasting automatically on Pop!_OS COSMIC, and how to choose the best Paste Preference.
On Pop!_OS COSMIC, Vibe Typer may sometimes show this message after you finish recording:
Copied. Press Ctrl+VThis means your transcription worked. Vibe Typer copied the final text to your clipboard, but did not press paste automatically.
When this happens
This behavior only applies when all of these are true:
- You are using Linux on Wayland.
- Your desktop session is COSMIC.
- COSMIC clipboard data-control is not available to Vibe Typer.
- Your Paste Preference is Plain text paste or Standard paste.
In this situation, Vibe Typer avoids sending an unreliable background paste shortcut. Instead, it leaves the transcript on your clipboard so you can paste it yourself.
What to do
When you see Copied. Press Ctrl+V:
- Click into the text field where you want the transcription.
- Press
Ctrl + V.
Your transcript should appear in the focused app.
Why Vibe Typer does this
Wayland desktops are more restrictive about background input and clipboard access than X11. On COSMIC, paste-style insertion can be unreliable when data-control is not available.
Rather than risk pasting into the wrong place or silently failing, Vibe Typer uses the safer fallback:
- copy the transcript,
- show a clear message,
- let you choose exactly where to paste.
Does this happen in Type mode?
Usually, no.
If your Paste Preference is Type (prefers no clipboard), Vibe Typer tries to insert text by simulating typing instead of using paste. The COSMIC clipboard-only behavior is for paste modes, not normal Type mode insertion.
Type mode may still use a clipboard fallback in some edge cases, such as unsupported characters or platform failures, but that is separate from the COSMIC Copied. Press Ctrl+V flow.
If Type mode feels very slow for Cyrillic or other non-Latin dictation, check your active keyboard layout. Type mode is fastest when the active system layout can type the dictated characters. See why typing simulation can be slow with the wrong keyboard layout.
Recommended setting for COSMIC
For the most automatic behavior on Pop!_OS COSMIC, use:
Type (prefers no clipboard)To change this:
- Open Vibe Typer.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Paste Preferences.
- Set the default mode, or the specific app's mode, to Type (prefers no clipboard).
Use Plain text paste or Standard paste for apps where you prefer manual paste behavior, where paste shortcuts work reliably, or where you dictate long non-Latin text while keeping an English keyboard layout active.
If copying fails
If Vibe Typer says it could not copy the transcript to the clipboard, make sure wl-clipboard is installed and Wayland clipboard access is available on your system.
You can also try:
- Restart Vibe Typer.
- Run the in-app Wayland setup again.
- Switch the target app to Type (prefers no clipboard) in Paste Preferences.
