Vibe Typer Launches New Magic Formatter, Its Own Model Built Just for Cleaning Up Dictation

Press release · Australia,

Vibe Typer's new Magic Formatter is its own model and the best for cleaning up dictation. It's fast, it can't hallucinate, and it's free on every plan.

Vibe Typer types what people say into whatever app is open, on Linux, Windows, Mac and iPhone. From today, its desktop apps tidy dictation with a new Magic Formatter: Vibe Typer's own model, trained in-house just for cleaning up dictation, and only in Vibe Typer. It is on by default, and people who already use Magic Formatter get the new one when they update.

Magic Formatter is the step between speech and text. It drops the ums, the repeats and the part the speaker corrected, so "we'll meet at 2pm. Sorry, I mean 3pm." types "we'll meet at 3pm", and it sets capitals, punctuation, paragraphs and lists.

The new one is the best model for cleaning up dictation, and it is far better at paragraphs and lists than the previous Magic Formatter. It formats a short message in about a third of a second, and a long one in about a second.

It can't hallucinate, by design. Most dictation apps clean up with an AI that writes text, which is how they end up rewording people, adding words or answering a question instead of typing it. The new Magic Formatter tidies the words people said and never writes new ones. And it is free on every plan, the Free plan included, and never counts toward a user's AI operations.

"People told us they wanted what lands on the screen to be what they actually said, not a rewrite of it," said Futsy, founder of Vibe Typer. "So we built our own model that doesn't rewrite. It keeps your words and clears out the ums and the bit you corrected."

The results

  • Paragraphs: in 400 test dictations over 150 words, Vibe Typer's new Magic Formatter split 97 in 100 into paragraphs. On the 769 test dictations over 100 words, the new one was picked 453 times to 135 in a blind comparison.
  • Lists: talk through a list and you get a list. In Vibe Typer's tests, the new Magic Formatter got 23 times as many spoken lists right as the previous one.
  • Picked three times as often: in a blind comparison across 2,400 dictations in 46 languages, the new Magic Formatter was picked 1,145 times and the previous one 368 times, with 887 ties.
  • Ahead in 45 of the 46 languages tested, including each of the 10 languages Vibe Typer users dictate in most: English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Italian and Czech.
  • No new words: in 2,400 test dictations, Vibe Typer's previous Magic Formatter added or reworded words in 420 of them, about 1 in 6. The new one added none.
  • Speed: it formats a short message in about a third of a second, and a long one in about a second.
